EBITDA Calculator

An EBITDA calculator is a tool that derives earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, typically by starting from net income and adding back those four expense categories, or by starting from operating income and adding back depreciation and amortization. The result approximates a business's core operating profitability before financing and non-cash charges. It is widely used to compare operating performance across companies with different capital structures and tax situations.

Problem & Application

Buyers, lenders, and investors often anchor valuations and loan terms to EBITDA, so owner-operators preparing for a sale or financing round need a clean, defensible figure. A calculator is only as good as the inputs, and informal add-backs or misclassified expenses can inflate or understate the number in ways that fall apart under diligence. Getting the underlying books right matters far more than the arithmetic itself.

In Short

An EBITDA calculator turns clean financials into a comparable profitability metric, but its credibility depends on accurate, properly classified inputs.
