Financial Glossary
An Entrepreneur in Residence (EIR) is a seasoned founder or operator who takes a temporary role inside a venture capital firm, accelerator, or established company. The EIR uses that platform to evaluate markets, incubate new business ideas, advise portfolio companies, or build the foundation for a startup they intend to spin out. The arrangement gives the entrepreneur capital, network, and resources while the host organization gains operating talent and early access to promising ventures.
For founders between companies, an EIR role provides runway and infrastructure to validate a concept before committing fully. For a VC firm or larger operator, it is a low-cost way to source deals and de-risk new bets by putting a proven builder close to the work. Clear expectations on equity, compensation, and what happens if a venture spins out are what keep the relationship clean.
An EIR arrangement pairs experienced operators with capital and resources, accelerating the path from idea to fundable company.
