Form 1045, Application for Tentative Refund, is an IRS form individuals, estates, and trusts use to request a quick refund resulting from the carryback of certain items, most commonly a net operating loss, an unused general business credit, or a claim of right adjustment. It offers a faster, more limited review than filing an amended return, with the IRS generally processing it within a shorter window. The form must be filed within a specific period after the year that generated the carryback.
A business owner or real estate investor who has a loss year may be able to apply that loss against a prior profitable year and recover taxes already paid, improving cash flow when it is most needed. Form 1045 can release that refund faster than an amended return, which matters for owner-operators managing tight liquidity after a downturn. Because carryback rules and eligibility have changed over time, current IRS guidance should be confirmed before filing.
Form 1045 is the fast track to a carryback refund, making it a useful tool for turning a loss year into recovered cash.
