LLC Business License
A business license is a government-issued permit that authorizes a company to legally operate, and it is separate from the act of forming an LLC. Forming the LLC creates the legal entity with the state, while licenses and permits, which may be issued at the state, county, or city level, grant permission to conduct a specific business activity in a location. The licenses an LLC needs depend on its industry and where it operates.
Problem & Application
New owner-operators often assume that filing LLC paperwork is all they need, then discover they also require local operating permits, sales tax registrations, or industry-specific licenses. A short-term-rental host may need a city lodging permit, while a campground operator may face health, zoning, or food-service licensing on top of the LLC. Missing a required license can mean fines, back taxes, or being forced to halt operations.
