Financial Glossary
Local taxes are taxes imposed by governments below the state level, such as cities, counties, school districts, and special districts. Depending on the jurisdiction, they can include local income or wage taxes, local sales taxes layered on top of state sales tax, property taxes, and lodging or occupancy taxes. Rates, rules, and filing requirements vary widely from one locality to the next.
Lodging operators feel local taxes acutely, because campgrounds, STRs, and hotels often owe city or county occupancy taxes in addition to state sales tax, sometimes collected through the booking platform and sometimes not. Multi-location and multi-jurisdiction operators can face overlapping local obligations that are easy to miss, and unremitted local taxes accrue penalties fast. Because local rates and registration rules change frequently, verify current requirements with each jurisdiction rather than assuming the state-level rules cover you.
Local taxes are where small operators most often have a hidden compliance gap, especially around lodging and occupancy levies. Knowing exactly which jurisdictions you owe is the foundation of staying clean.
