Net Income or Loss

Net income or loss is the final figure on an income statement, calculated by subtracting all expenses, including cost of goods sold, operating costs, interest, and taxes, from total revenue. When the result is positive, the business has net income; when expenses exceed revenue, it reports a net loss for the period. This figure flows into retained earnings and ultimately reflects whether the business was profitable.

Problem & Application

For an STR portfolio or campground operator, a clean net income or loss figure is what tells you whether a property or season actually made money after cleaning, maintenance, debt service, and depreciation. Many owner-operators mistake strong cash in the bank for profit, when timing of bookings or large repairs can mask a real loss. Calculating it correctly each period keeps owners from reinvesting against a number that does not exist.

In Short

Net income or loss is the single clearest measure of whether a period worked financially. Getting it right depends on capturing every expense, not just the obvious ones.
