Small Business Tax Deductions

Small business tax deductions are ordinary and necessary business expenses that owners can subtract from gross income to reduce the amount of profit subject to tax. Common categories include supplies, rent, payroll, professional fees, vehicle and travel costs, and home-office expenses when they qualify. To be deductible, an expense must be directly tied to the business and properly substantiated with records.

Problem & Application

Owner-operators frequently overpay tax simply because they fail to track or document deductible expenses throughout the year, or they miss deductions specific to their industry. STR and campground operators, for example, may overlook deductions tied to property upkeep, supplies, and qualifying portions of personal-use assets. Because eligibility rules and limits change, it is best to confirm current IRS guidance and keep contemporaneous records rather than reconstructing expenses at filing time.

In Short

Capturing every legitimate small business tax deduction can meaningfully lower your tax bill, but only with disciplined recordkeeping and current rules.
