Financial Glossary
A business trip write-off is the deduction of ordinary and necessary travel expenses incurred while traveling away from your tax home primarily for business. Deductible categories typically include transportation, lodging, and a portion of meals, provided the trip's main purpose is business and the costs are reasonable. Personal portions of a mixed-purpose trip are not deductible and must be separated out.
STR hosts, campground operators, and real estate investors often travel to scout properties, meet vendors, or inspect sites, and those trips can be legitimately deductible when the primary purpose is business. The risk is mixing personal vacation days with business activity and failing to allocate expenses, which is a common audit trigger. Keeping a clear itinerary, receipts, and notes on the business purpose of each day is what makes the deduction defensible.
Done correctly, business travel deductions reduce taxable income, but they hinge on a documented business purpose and a clean split between business and personal costs.
