Form 1099-INT (Interest Income)

Form 1099-INT is the IRS information return used to report interest income paid to a recipient during the year, such as interest from bank accounts, loans, or certain investments. The form identifies both the payer and the recipient, including the payer's Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), which is the number the IRS uses to match the reported interest to the issuing institution. The recipient uses the form to report the interest as taxable income on their return.

Problem & Application

Business owners and real-estate investors who earn interest on reserve accounts, seller-financed notes, or private loans may both receive and need to issue a 1099-INT, and the payer's TIN must be accurate for the IRS matching system to work. A missing or incorrect TIN is a common reason forms get rejected or generate notices. Owners who lend money personally or through an entity often overlook their obligation to issue these forms.

In Short

Whether you receive or issue one, the 1099-INT ties reported interest to a specific payer through the TIN, so accuracy on that field matters.
