Form 1040-X (Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return)

Form 1040-X, the Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, is the IRS form individuals use to correct a return they have already filed. It is structured in three columns showing the originally reported figures, the net change, and the corrected amounts, along with an explanation of why the change is being made. It is used to fix errors or omissions such as missed income, overlooked deductions or credits, or a wrong filing status.

Problem & Application

Owner-operators and STR hosts frequently discover after filing that they forgot a deductible expense, received a corrected 1099, or misreported rental income, any of which can be addressed with a 1040-X. Amending can recover money you overpaid or head off penalties from underreporting before the IRS catches it. There are time limits for claiming a refund, so check current IRS guidance on how long you have to amend a given year.

In Short

A 1040-X is the proper way to correct a filed individual return rather than filing a second original. File it once you have accurate numbers and a clear explanation of the change.
