How to Fill Out Schedule A

Schedule A (Form 1040) is the IRS schedule individuals use to itemize deductions instead of taking the standard deduction. It groups deductible items into categories such as medical and dental expenses, state and local taxes, home mortgage interest, gifts to charity, and certain other deductions. Taxpayers complete each section, total the amounts, and carry the result to their Form 1040.

Problem & Application

Filling out Schedule A correctly matters most when your itemizable expenses exceed the standard deduction, which is common for real estate investors and owners with significant mortgage interest and state taxes. The challenge is substantiation: each line requires records, and limits apply to several categories, so check current IRS instructions for the rules and caps that apply to your tax year. Itemizing without documentation invites disallowance if you are audited.

In Short

Schedule A lets you itemize when it beats the standard deduction, but only well-documented amounts in the right categories hold up. Compare both approaches before filing.
