Filling out a 1099 means completing the form's fields with the payer's and recipient's names, addresses, and taxpayer identification numbers, then entering the total reportable payment in the appropriate box. The correct box depends on the form and the type of payment, such as nonemployee compensation on a 1099-NEC. Accuracy in the tax-ID and dollar fields is critical because the IRS matches the form against the recipient's return.
For an owner-operated business issuing forms to contractors, the recipient's taxpayer identification number pulled from a W-9 is the field most often entered wrong, which leads to mismatches and IRS notices. Entering a contractor's pay in the wrong box, or transposing a TIN, can also expose the payer to backup-withholding requirements. Filling each field carefully against the recipient's W-9 prevents corrected filings and follow-up correspondence.
Filling out a 1099 correctly is mostly about precise recipient data and the right box, since the IRS cross-checks every figure you report.
