Schedule SE Instructions (Self-Employment Tax)

Schedule SE is the IRS form attached to Form 1040 that self-employed individuals use to calculate the self-employment tax owed on their net earnings from a trade, business, or partnership. The form walks through determining net self-employment income, applying the combined Social Security and Medicare tax, and figuring the deductible portion of that tax. It is required once net earnings from self-employment reach the IRS filing threshold.

Problem & Application

STR operators, campground owners, fractional consultants, and other owner-operators who report business income on Schedule C usually owe self-employment tax, and Schedule SE is where that liability is computed. Getting the net-earnings figure right depends on clean books, because every deductible expense lowers the base the tax is applied to. Many sole proprietors are surprised by the size of this tax because it covers both the employer and employee shares of Social Security and Medicare.

In Short

Schedule SE translates business profit into the self-employment tax owed, so accurate bookkeeping and a correct net-earnings figure directly affect what you pay.
