Schedule A (Form 1040) Instructions

Schedule A is the IRS form attached to Form 1040 used to itemize deductions instead of taking the standard deduction. Its instructions walk through each category of allowable deduction, including qualifying medical expenses, state and local taxes, home mortgage interest, and charitable contributions. Taxpayers itemize on Schedule A when their total allowable deductions exceed the standard deduction for their filing status.

Problem & Application

Real-estate investors and homeowners often have significant mortgage interest and property taxes that make itemizing on Schedule A worthwhile, but the rules limit how much of certain categories can be deducted. The instructions matter because deductions like state and local taxes are subject to caps that change with legislation. Working through the current-year instructions, rather than assuming last year's rules apply, is the only way to claim every dollar you are entitled to without overstating. Confirm category limits against current IRS guidance, as they are frequently adjusted.

In Short

Schedule A is worth completing whenever your itemized deductions beat the standard deduction, and following the current instructions ensures each category is claimed correctly.
