Writing Off Expenses on a 1099

Writing off expenses on a 1099 refers to how self-employed individuals and independent contractors deduct ordinary and necessary business costs against the income reported to them on Form 1099. These deductions are typically claimed on Schedule C, where business expenses such as supplies, mileage, software, and a portion of home-office costs reduce net profit and therefore the income subject to income and self-employment tax.

Problem & Application

Many STR co-hosts, freelance designers, and contract operators receive 1099 income but pay tax on the full amount because they never track deductible costs. Keeping clean records of mileage, equipment, subscriptions, and other business spending throughout the year is what separates a contractor who overpays from one who keeps more of every dollar earned.

In Short

Deductible expenses only help if they are documented and clearly business-related, so maintain receipts and a separate business account. Confirm what qualifies under current IRS rules before filing.
