Form 1040-ES (Estimated Tax for Individuals)

Form 1040-ES is the IRS package individuals use to figure and pay estimated tax on income that is not subject to withholding. It includes a worksheet for projecting taxable income, expected deductions, and self-employment tax, plus payment vouchers for each installment. People who owe tax beyond what withholding covers generally use it to avoid an underpayment penalty.

Problem & Application

STR hosts, campground owners, independent contractors, and other self-employed operators rarely have taxes withheld, so Form 1040-ES is how they stay current with the IRS across the year. Underpaying or skipping an installment can lead to penalties even if you settle up at filing time, while overpaying ties up cash you could be running through the business. Because installment due dates and safe-harbor rules can change, check current IRS guidance each year.

In Short

Form 1040-ES turns a lumpy year-end tax bill into manageable periodic payments. Pairing it with a realistic income projection keeps both the IRS and your cash flow happy.
