Schedule B (Interest and Ordinary Dividends)

Schedule B is a supporting schedule to Form 1040 used to report taxable interest and ordinary dividend income, generally required when those amounts exceed the IRS reporting threshold for the year. It lists each payer and the amount received, totaling the figures that flow onto the main return. Part III of the schedule also asks about foreign bank accounts and trusts, tying into separate foreign-account reporting obligations.

Problem & Application

Real estate investors and business owners who hold reserve accounts, money-market funds, or brokerage positions often cross the interest and dividend reporting threshold without realizing it. A correctly completed Schedule B reconciles the 1099-INT and 1099-DIV forms they receive against what lands on the return, and its foreign-account questions can flag separate filing duties that carry steep penalties if missed.

In Short

Schedule B keeps interest and dividend reporting transparent and surfaces foreign-account questions that can trigger additional filings. Accurate entries here prevent mismatches with payer-issued 1099s.
