Form 8962 (Premium Tax Credit)

IRS Form 8962 is used to calculate and reconcile the Premium Tax Credit, a subsidy that helps cover health insurance purchased through the Health Insurance Marketplace. Taxpayers compare the advance credit payments made to their insurer during the year against the credit they actually qualify for based on final income. The form determines whether they receive an additional credit or must repay part of the advance.

Problem & Application

Self-employed owner-operators and startup founders with variable income are especially prone to over- or under-estimating their annual earnings when enrolling, which directly affects Form 8962 reconciliation. Underestimating income can trigger an unexpected repayment at filing time, while overestimating leaves credit on the table. Because eligibility and income thresholds change, the current-year figures should be confirmed against IRS guidance and the Marketplace 1095-A statement.

In Short

Form 8962 squares the health-coverage subsidy you received with what you actually earned. Accurate income tracking through the year prevents filing-time surprises.
